"Respecting Authority"

Dear reader do you know there are many so called Christians that do not respect the authority over them. From the smallest of things to the greatest Christians are taking the law into their own hands. We just heard of a Christian murdering a doctor that owned and worked in an abortion clinic. Abortion is murder. Murdering a murderer is taking the law into your own hands. I don’t think the church teaches how important it is for a Christian to keep quite when they are facing those in authority. I have heard Christians say they have no authority over the law. Dear reader God does. He is the one they will and must answer to. Your involvement is wrong and not in accordance with the Word of God. After creation how did authority get started? We know it did not start with Adam. He had no authority over his wife Eve or his son Cain. I believe it started with Noah.

Gen 6:9-10 Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God. NIV

Noah was a family man but unlike Adam he had authority over his family. Noah was told by God to do a very big job, build a large Ark. He told his sons that this is what we will be doing the next hundred years and they obeyed their father because he was in charge. He had authority. Because of their obedience they were all saved and blessed.

So I would say that authority starts in the family. If the head of the house does not have it then the family is not united. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all had authority, although there were times a family member or a servant rebelled against them, most of the time their authority was respected and obeyed. Joseph however had to go through many painful years to learn how he was to take a position of authority that would change the history of his people and the world. Joseph was chosen by God to serve Him, he was known as a “The Dreamer”. He was also guilty of pride. He learned humility by being a slave and a prisoner in Egypt. He understood that those who had authority over him could punish him unjustly as did the wife of his owner Potiphar.  Joseph became the highest authority under Pharaoh, but he never misused it or accused one person unjustly. Even when he played tricks on his brothers he was careful to see they did not suffer.  Joseph ‘s responsibilities were so great that only a righteous God fearing man could accomplish them. Joseph  became just that kind of man.. One of my favorite verses in the Bible is when Joseph faces his brothers:

Gen 50:20
20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. KJV

Daniel was also in a place were he was a stranger like Joseph. He was bond and carry away to a strange land. However he was blessed and grew up to serve the King. He was a highly respect administrator of two kings in Babylon. Although he was loyal to Jehovah and was punished for it he never suffered. God was always with him and he was always with God. Like Joseph having brothers that were very jealous of the love their father had for his younger son. There was jealousy in Babylon because the King loved Daniel.

Dan 2:48-4948 Then the king placed Daniel in a high position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men. 49 Moreover, at Daniel's request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego administrators over the province of Babylon, while Daniel himself remained at the royal court. NIV

Throughout the Old Testament the well known prophets and patriarchs all live under the authority of powerful Kings. Many times their lives were in danger or they were imprisoned unjustly. Never did these servants of God disrespect the authority over them. What greater story could be told from the Old Testament than when David found King Saul sleeping and he removed his spear and his water jug and returned to his own camp. What a great story this is and what a great example of respecting authority.
1 Sam 26:7-9 7 So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the people lay round about him. 9 And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the Lord's anointed, and be guiltless? KJV

Naturally in this story we are dealing with King Saul that has been anointed and chosen as the first king of Israel. David had already been anointed as the next king. His captain Abishai wanted him to kill Saul and get on with ruling the people. David wanted to be king but not that way. He would play a little trick on Saul and still show his loyalty to him.

1 Sam 26:12 12 So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul's bolster; and they gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither awaked: for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep from the Lord was fallen upon them. KJV David waited until morning then called out to the king. He even poked fun at Abner the captain of Saul’s army saying, “where were you while I was robbing the king”? Even in his mad mind King Saul repents once again and thanks David for his mercy. Saul returns to his place and David returns to the mountains.

1 Sam 26:21,25 21 Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly. 25 Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great things, and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place. KJV Dear reader it is not easy to be unjustly accused by some one that has authority over you. Perhaps you are at work or in school or you are sitting in a courtroom. How does a Christian justify themselves against evil accusations? In the New Testament we find the answer. Acts 16:17-18
This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved." 18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her. NIV

While this young girl was telling everyone the truth about Paul and Silas they were aware that it was a demon prophesying and challenging them. So they used the authority given them through the Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus to control it and remove it. For doing this her owners were very mad and had them arrested. They were falsely accused of “public disturbance” Dear reader my question is whose authority was respected? The answer is the Holy Spirit. Who respected it? Paul and Silas and for that they were thrown into jail after they were beaten. They did not turn on their accusers or the soldiers. They sung praises to God and were free in just a matter of hours. Infact they were holding a revival at midnight with the jailer and all the other prisoners.  Mark 10:42-45   42 Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."  NIV

Dear reader this really can bust your balloon of pride as a Jesus follower. You would think that after all the loyalty to Christ someone would get a higher position than a servant. Servants are always under authority and have little opportunity to advance. A few do after years of service with one master, but only a few. Not much to look forward to. So how do we as servants of Christ gain authority? First we have to preserve and work on our humility increase our faith and respect everyone.
  Mark 11:22-28
22 "Have faith in God," Jesus answered. 23 "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."   27 They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28 "By what authority are you doing these things?" they asked. "And who gave you authority to do this?"
NIV

The scholars and priests that spent there time in the scriptures did not recognized God’s authority or His Son. Jesus only understood the scriptures and was here on earth to fulfill them. Jesus spoke and healed with authority.
Luke 5:23-26   23 Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'? 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. . . ." He said to the paralyzed man, "I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home."  25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. NIV  It was before the cross that Jesus forgave sins through His word. It was after the cross that all sins were forgiven through His blood. Jesus was unjustly arrested and accused but his only response to them was to acknowledge who He was, the Son of God. We start with respecting authority that is over us.  We too have authority, we have authority over all evil in the name of Jesus. Just as His disciples did.

Matt 10:1 10 He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. NIV
The Holy Spirit that lives in us and speaks through us is the greatest authority over us here on earth. He should always be respected loved and obeyed. Dear reader in closing we must return to those that are in authority, who make the laws and enforce them. Paul taught Timothy about that and now he is teaching you.  1 Tim 2:1-3   I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;  KJV  Paul says that we must pray for them and give thanks for them, so that they as well as us may be blessed. In verse three “ For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour”. So respecting authority is good for all mankind, because it is good for God.  Amen & Amen
